The Problem with Yellow Flowers on Hummingbird Feeders

Robbie and Gary Gardening Easy, the makers of the video above, kept the yellow flowers.

It works for them and their hummingbird visitors.

The problem?

Yellow attracts bees

Bees swarm the nectar feeding spouts & drink the nectar.

Other nectar feeders have bee guards (pictured above). They prevent bees from eating the sugar water.

Yellow flowers may or may not cause a bee problem for your hummingbird feeder.

It’s advised that you paint the yellow flowers on your hummingbird feeders.

Use red nail polish, model paint, or acrylic paint for longevity.

No Perch? No Problem!

You can make a perch using twist ties or rubber wire.

Simply wrap it sturdily around the flower feeding station to secure it.

Make sure enough of the twist tie extends past the feeding station to be a ledge for hummingbirds to grab onto.

Alternative perch making materials include:

  • bent paperclips
  • florist wire
  • moldable wire that won’t fray (can hurt birds)

Check out these easy DIY hummingbird feeders. They're practically free which is great for kids and classrooms!
